EASTER, WET, WATER PLUNGE MONDAY. The second day of Easter holidays: Ukrainian customs and rituals

On April 21, 2025, interactive classes with first-year higher education seekers of the Faculty of Medicine and a meeting of the SSC of the Department of Social Sciences “Via scientorum” dedicated to Ukrainian customs and traditions of Easter Monday were held. The entire Easter week in traditional culture is full of various rites and customs that are aimed, in modern language, at communication, communication in the family, close and distant relatives. Special attention is paid to raising children, respectful attitude towards older family members. It was on Easter Monday that children went to visit their grandparents, godparents with  Easter eggs and Easter cakes. Adults in return also gave gifts of goodies and Easter eggs, which carried encoded wishes of health, spiritual encouragement, good fortune, success and inspiration.

It was from Easter Monday that young people moved the evening parties from the “houses” to the “street”. From this day on, gaivka and vesnyanka are sung. And on Monday, you definitely need to swing on a swing, especially for engaged couples. The higher you swing, the more successful the year will be.

Another name for the second day of Easter is WET MONDAY. It was believed that water on this day has healing and nourishing power. Therefore, in the morning, the guys would collect ice water and pour it on each other. Then they would go and pour it on the girls. Depending on the region, the girl would give the guy an Easter egg either to “buy off” the watering, or as a thank you for the watering. In general, it was considered bad luck to stay “dry” on a “wet” Monday.

Children and youth with special educational needs from the NGO “Special Children” visited the meeting of the “Via scientorum” group. There was a fascinating interactive lecture-presentation “Easter, Wet, Water Plunge Monday: Ukrainian Customs, Traditions, Rites” by the candidate of historical sciences, associate professor, scientific director of the group, Tetyana Leonidivna Podkupko. Those present learned the etymology of the names of the holiday, its various interpretations. The program also included a thematic quiz on the Kahut platform, riddles, quizzes, quests, and competitions. They tasted traditional Easter delicacies. It is very nice that most of the participants baked and decorated Easter cakes themselves, sometimes with their mothers and grandmothers. Preparation for Easter brings families closer together, unites them with common traditions. We are happy to immerse ourselves as a family of ONMedU in the whirlpool of Ukrainian Easter holidays!
