April 19 — ENVIRONMENT DAY

This professional environmental holiday is celebrated in Ukraine annually on the third Saturday of April. It was established in 1998. By decree of the President of Ukraine, and it was initiated by the All-Ukrainian campaign “Tree — Life” in 1997–1998, which involved the population in the work of landscaping and beautification of their cities and villages.

Every year, various events were held on this day: planting trees, arranging parks and squares, creating new lawns and flower beds, cleaning up natural landfills on the banks of rivers, information and educational work.

Today, in conditions of war, environmental issues are becoming especially acute: in addition to our everyday problems with air and water pollution, Russian aggression has caused additional pollution of the ecosystem. A huge amount of hazardous waste has been generated, which threatens both the health of the population and the entire environment in the future. Russia has caused damage to the environment, according to the State Environmental Inspectorate of Ukraine, in the amount of 2.5 trillion UAH. But it is impossible to fully assess the huge scale of damage without demining the territories.

Against the backdrop of the war, it seems that environmental protection issues are fading into the background. However, the war not only destroys cities and takes lives, but also has a catastrophic impact on the ecological state of the country. More than 4,600 facts of harm to nature have been recorded – to air, water and land resources, and the reserve fund.

What can each of us do to improve the ecological situation?

Waste sorting, saving water and electricity, which has become especially relevant after the enemy attacks on the electricity industry, the use of environmentally friendly modes of transport, “green” bags in supermarkets, an ethical attitude towards nature… Every step can be our contribution to improving the ecological state of Ukraine.

The Department of Hygiene, Medical Ecology and Public Health (Head of the Department – Dr. of Medical Sciences, Prof. V. V. Babiшenko) has been established at ONMedU, which examines the impact of environmental factors on the health of the population, human interaction with harmful substances, preventive measures and many other important aspects of preserving health in interaction with environmental conditions. This is an important contribution to environmental education and training of future doctors.
