April 26 is the International Day of Remembrance of the Chernobyl Disaster

April 26, 1986 is the day of the greatest man-made disaster in the history of mankind. During the experiment, two explosions occurred at the 4th reactor of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. A cloud of radioactive dust escaped into the Earth’s atmosphere, and the wind carried dangerous radioactive isotopes that settled on the ground and penetrated into the water.

38 years have passed since the accident, but its consequences remain the subject of discussion in the world scientific community. According to the definition of UNSCEAR and WHO, the Chernobyl disaster is classified as a nuclear facility accident of the highest level.

During the past week, the teachers of the department of social sciences, with the organizational assistance of the head of the department, assistant professor Olha Sikorska and assistant professor Elena Uvarova, held a series of events to honor the memory of the fallen participants in the elimination of the consequences of the accident.

Employees of the department – A.Krytska, S.Ivleva, M.Kulachynskyi, I.Telelym, L.Filyuk, N.Arefieva, O.Uvarova – presented an informative guide and organized a viewing of videos dedicated to the disaster and tragic pages of Chernobyl. Hihger education seekers prepared reports and presentations in which they highlighted the history of the creation of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, the causes of the accident, and the consequences of radiation damage to humans.

April 26 is the day of heroism of station workers, liquidators, firefighters, doctors and all people involved in liquidation of the consequences of the accident.

Chernobyl disaster in numbers and dates

In 1977, the first unit of the Chornobyl NPP was launched.
For 2 days the world knew nothing about the explosion.
30 NPP employees died from the explosion or acute radiation sickness within a few months of the accident.
500,000 people died from radiation, according to independent experts.
90,784 people were evacuated from the 81st settlement of Ukraine by the end of the summer of 1986.
More than 600,000 people became liquidators of the accident – they fought the fire and cleared debris.
2,293 Ukrainian cities and towns with a population of approximately 2.6 million people are contaminated with radioactive nuclides.
For 10 days – from April 26 to May 6 – activity emission from the damaged reactor continued at the level of tens of millions of curies per day, after which it decreased thousands of times. Experts call this period the active stage of the accident.
11 tons of nuclear fuel were released into the atmosphere as a result of the accident at the 4th power unit of the Chornobyl NPP.
400 species of animals, birds and fish, 1200 species of flora continue to exist in the “exclusion zone”, where people are prohibited from living due to significant and catastrophic pollution of air, soil and water.
