The Department of Psychiatry, Narcology and Psychology of Odessa National Medical University will henceforth be named after Valerii Semenovych Bitenskii – a Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Medicine, Professor, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Psychiatrist of the highest category.
Valerii Semenovych Bitenskii was born in 1943. From 1990 to 1993 he was the Head of the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychoneurology, from 1993 – the Head of the Department of Psychiatry, Narcology and Psychology of Odessa National Medical University.
He was a well-known scientist in the field of psychiatry and narcology, the founder of a new concept of pathogenesis of narcological and mental diseases, based on studies of disorders of paroxysmal brain activity and nerve plasticity, creator of new highly effective methods of treatment of mental and narcological diseases, anauthor of new directions in psychiatry and narcology: adolescent narcology, psychiatry and medical psychology in infants, clinical narcological receptor. He developed a unique method of conditioned reflex therapy of alcoholism and drug addiction. He studied the impact of socio-psychological crisis in modern society on the human psyche, identified new clinical and pathogenetic aspects of psychogenic diseases – noogenic neuroses.
He was a highly qualified teacher of the higher medical school. He
prepared 16 doctors and candidates of sciences. He was the author of the textbook “Psychiatry. Course of lectures “, which in 2006 was recognized as the best in the competition of textbooks named after acad. V.P. Protopopov. Valerii Semenovych also wrote 254 scientific papers, including 6 monographs, textbooks and manuals. Among them there are “Adolescent Addiction” (1991), “Obstetric and Perinatal Aspects of Addiction” (1999), “Kindling in the Formation of Pathological Dominance, Mental Disorders and Their Therapy” (2001), “Clinical and Pathogenetic Aspects of Alcoholism and Addiction” (2007). . “Problems of nooethics and mechanisms of noogenic mental disorders” (2008).
Valerii Semenovych was an honorary member of the Scientific and Practical Society of Neurologists, Psychiatrists and Narcologists of Ukraine, a member of the Research Society for the Study of Alcoholism (USA), World and European Psychiatric Associations, New York Academy of Sciences, the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Mental Health and Journal of Psychiatry. psychopharmacotherapy “, a member of the editorial board of 7 domestic and foreign professional journals. He was awarded the Order of Merit of the III degree and the Badge of Honor.
