Days of Ukrainian Writing and Language at ONMedU

The staff of the Department of Social Sciences headed by  associate professor O.O. Sikorskaya  held a series of events dedicated to the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language, which is celebrated annually on November 9, in order to enhance the general culture of speech and to instill  love for the Ukrainian language. It is language that helps to shape the national picture of the world, immerses new generations in the soil of spirituality, and, importantly, teaches love of the mother tongue not with declarations but with exquisite models.

According to the plan approved by the Vice-rector for scientific-pedagogical work (issues of humanitarian education and upbringing), Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor, K.A. Talalaev, professors of the Department of Social Sciences held various activities with students daily from October 31 to November 8. Among them were the Ukrainian language Olympiad, thematic lectures, discussions, presentations and reports, writing essays, reciting poems, flashmobs, literary readings, etc., organized by the staff of the department – assistant professor T.L. Podkupko-Dyachkina, associate professor M.M. Kulachinskii, assistant professor N.O. Cherniata and others. Many foreign students also participated in the events.

Innovative teaching methods were presented as well. For example, the head teacher of the department, senior lecturer A.S. Shanina  gave a lecture-discussion on the topic: “Modern Ukrainian medical discourse: communicative aspect”, during which the students covered the basic communication features of Ukrainian doctor’s speech in the “doctor-patient” interactions, discussed the communication strategies and tactics used by doctors with patients.

“Musical Hours” prepared by the associate professor O.O. Uvarova were fun and informative, they were dedicated to  “Ukrainian soul in song” (with second year students of  group #6 of medical faculty № 1) and to “Red is love” (with second year students of  group #3 of medical faculty № 1). The students sang songs of Ukrainian classics and pop music accompanied with the guitar, recited verses of modern Ukrainian poets.

A musical-poetic concert on the topic “What a wonderful native word! It is not the world, but the worlds », prepared by second year students of group 8 of medical faculty № 2 (supervised by – Assoc. Prof. O.O. Uvarova), was held at a high organizational level. Students prepared reports, recited their own poems and poems of Ukrainian poets, sang Ukrainian songs.

On the eve of the holiday the head of the department, associate professor O.O. Sikorskaya  and the head teacher, senior lecturer O.S. Shanina gave the first year students of groups #5 and 6 of medical faculty № 2  a dictation within the framework of the action “All-Ukrainian Radio Dictation of National Unity”, organized by the National Public TV and the Radio Company of Ukraine.

The Vice-Rector, Associate Professor K. Talalayev expressed special thanks to the Department of Social Sciences for the consultative assistance and collectives of the Scientific Library of ONMedU represented by the Director N.V. Garina  as well as the Center for Student Creativity represented by the head  S.O. Bychkova  for continuous fruitful cooperation.

At the Scientific Library, the faculty members together with the students visited a thematic book exhibition and listened to its review by the librarian I.M. Grabarchuk. Students were introduced to literature that will help them improve professional language, modern Ukrainian spelling and the basics of culture.

On November, 8, the Head of the Department, Associate Professor O.O. Sikorskaya and the staff of the department together with students, including foreign students, attended a concert organized by the Student Creativity Center. Students enthusiastically performed the numbers, including presentations, poems, songs, contests.

Indeed, a person can speak many languages, but best of all, he must be fluent in their mother tongue. Native language is a magical instrument, to the sounds of which delicate strings of the human soul resonate. In order to perceive the Ukrainian language as modern, European, rich, developed, it is necessary to demonstrate broadly and systematically the fullness and capacity of our language in all spheres of life.
