Report on summer internship in Portugal by Ivanna Malyuta

Dear students, scientists and teachers!

We are glad to announce that from June 26 to July 28, 2023, our 5th-year student of the Faculty of Medicine No. 2, Ivanna Malyuta, successfully completed a summer medical practice in neurology at the clinic of the Institute of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in the city of Porto (Portugal).

We wish Ivanna new successes and share with you her impressions of the internship:

“For a doctor, a medical student, participation in international internships is a new opportunity, it is always about expanding one’s worldview.

I was able to do an internship at the Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Santo António University Clinic specializing in Neurology in the city of Porto (Portugal) with the help of ICBAS and U.Porto. I was the only one from Ukraine among students from Brazil, Germany, Poland, Azerbaijan, Argentina, Romania, Ethiopia.

I have a lot of impressions and thoughts about the internship. During the month, my mentor was a neurologist, with whom I examined patients, held consultations and attended various manipulations. As a medical student, it was interesting to observe the advanced treatment of some diseases and to see the progress, for example, the treatment of multiple sclerosis with monoclonal antibodies. Adequate medical funding helps patients receive modern treatment and doctors use the latest new technologies.

In general, the medical system works clearly and harmoniously, everyone has their responsibilities, but doctors of different specialties easily interact and solve complex clinical cases, so there is a high probability of providing qualified medical care.

I am satisfied that I managed to gain medical experience abroad, meet foreign doctors, and see a modern approach to medicine. I believe that our medicine will also change for the better, we also have great potential. The medical world is open to everyone and it is important to learn from foreign colleagues to modernize Ukrainian medicine.”
