Actualization of the topic of Ukrainian statehood in the teaching of disciplines of the department of social sciences

October 14 is approaching, it is the day of the defenders of Ukraine, the day of the Cossacks, and the Intercession of the Holy Virgin. This day will be celebrated for the first time in the conditions of the full-scale military aggression of the Russian Federation. On July 28, for the first time this year, we celebrated the Day of Ukrainian Statehood. The tragic and heroic events of recent months have proven the importance of our values, symbols, meanings, and ideas. Ukrainians began to take a more responsible and conscious attitude to such pillars of statehood, its attributes as the Coat of Arms, Anthem, Flag…

On October 5, 2022, teachers of the Department of Social Sciences: head, candidate of philology. PhD, Assoc. Sikorska O.O., head teacher, candidate of philology, Shanina O.S., Doctor of Science Ph.D., Assoc. Podkupko T.L., PhD, Assoc.prof. Kulachynskyi M.M., Doctor of Science PhD, Assoc. Uvarova O.O. held a round table: “Updating the topic of Ukrainian statehood in the teaching of the department’s disciplines.”

For students of ONMedU, several optional disciplines have been developed by the teachers of the Department of Social Sciences. In each of them, great attention is paid to the development of Ukrainian statehood both in the distant past and at the present stage. Separate courses are fully devoted to the problems of Ukrainian state formation. In particular, the elective course dedicated to the “Ukrainian National Idea” is designed to directly reveal all the stages of the formation of the very concept of the state, the nation, its vocation and the main purpose of the existence of Ukrainians, the stages of the birth of the nation, the formation of Ukrainians as a political nation from the middle of the 17th century, the main civilizational challenges to our compatriots considered in the 18th-20th centuries and difficult ways of finding a consolidating idea of the nation in the 21st century.

Wars are usually won on the battlefields, and defending one’s positions, realising the weight and meaning of independence and freedom is taught in classrooms. Therefore, right now, more than ever, the question of actualizing the topic of Ukrainian statehood during the teaching of disciplines of the humanitarian, social science, and patriotic cycle for students of higher education at ONMedU are important. The teachers of the department try in every possible way to educate a conscious citizen, a patriot of his state, his city, and his alma mater, which contributes to the formation of a comprehensively developed specialist, doctor, and person.
