One of the conceptual principles of future employees training in the field of science and education is the formation of value bases of their activities, which, in particular, are focused on the concept of academic honesty.
At the Odessa National Medical University the Department of Philosophy and Bioethics in the training of doctors of philosophy at the III educational level, field of knowledge 22 “Health”, specialties 221 “Dentistry”, 222 “Medicine”, 226 “Pharmacy, industrial pharmacy” , 228 “Pediatrics” teaches a discipline with the same name.
The purpose of studying the discipline “Academic Honesty” is to master a set of epistemological and ethical principles, as well as statutory rules that should guide participants in the educational process during training, teaching and conducting scientific (creative) activities to ensure confidence in learning outcomes and / or scientific (creative) achievements.
The main tasks of studying the discipline “Academic Honesty” are:
definition of basic concepts, principles and rules of academic honesty;
clarification of national and international legal principles of academic honesty;
understanding the epistemological and ethical-legal aspects of academic honesty;
analysis and interpretation of signs of rational (including scientific) knowledge and patterns of development of science;
comprehension of criteria of scientificity and principles of academic honesty in scientific activity;
formation of the ability to identify violations of academic honesty, prevention of academic plagiarism and other manifestations of unethical conduct in scientific activities;
promoting the formation of a culture of academic honesty of the future scientist.
The discipline “Academic Honesty” is structured according to the following thematic plan:
Topic 1. The concept, general principles and rules of academic honesty. Regulatory framework.
Topic 2. Epistemological and ethical and legal aspects of academic honesty.
Topic 3. Knowledge and its satellites. Signs of rational knowledge. The problem of truthfulness of knowledge.
Topic 4. Patterns of science development. Forms of organization of scientific knowledge. Criteria of scientificity and academic honesty in scientific activity.
Topic 5. Violation of academic honesty. Anti-plagiarism measures. Citation and reference rules.
The study of the discipline “Academic Honesty” assumes that the following results will be obtained as a result.
A graduate student must know:
principles of research ethics;
the essence of distinguishing between epistemological and ethical-legal aspects of academic honesty;
signs of rational (including scientific) and criteria of scientific knowledge; legal bases of copyright;
citation rules and references to sources used;
forms, methods and means of identification, search and storage of information;
professional vocabulary and terminology in accordance with the direction of scientific research;
the concept of novelty of the study;
possibilities and limitations of the used research methods;
technology of writing articles for national and international scientific publications;
standards of registration of scientific works.
A graduate student must be able to:
use information technology to identify signs of plagiarism;
apply modern information technologies in scientific activity;
work with search engines;
receive and adequately interpret data from foreign sources and discuss scientific knowledge;
organize and conduct research and educational activities;
assess the theoretical and practical significance of the study;
conduct research in accordance with the purpose and objectives of the study by selected methods;
interpret the results of the study;
write a scientific article in accordance with the requirements of a scientific publication.
According to paragraph 3¹ of Article 58 of the Law of Ukraine “On Higher Education” scientific and pedagogical staff of higher education institutions are obliged to adhere to academic honesty principles in the educational process and scientific (creative) activities and ensure its observance by higher education receivers.
