On June 6, 2025, the ХХV All-Ukrainian Exhibition-Forum “Ukrainian Book in Odesa Region” was held at Odessa National Scientific Library, at which the “Ukrainian-English Explanatory Dictionary of Medical Terms” edited by the rector of ONMedU, academician of the NAMS of Ukraine, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Valerшш Mykolayovych Zaporozhan was presented. As part of the exhibition, the “Best Book” competition was held, in which the dictionary of Odessa National Medical University became the Laureate.
The authors presented the second revised and revised edition of the “Ukrainian-English Explanatory Dictionary of Medical Terms”, which not only continues and develops the ideas of the previous edition, but also significantly expands its content in accordance with the latest achievements of medical science, modern language standards and educational needs.
The formation of the Ukrainian scientific language is a difficult and long process that has experienced many difficulties and obstacles. During the late 20th and early 21st centuries, many specialized dictionaries were compiled that reflected the dynamics of the development of Ukrainian terminology in various fields of knowledge, including medicine.
Medical terminology is a complex system of professional concepts that includes the names of diseases, symptoms, anatomical structures, clinical syndromes, pharmaceuticals, etc. This vocabulary is mainly based on Latin and Greek, which have served as the universal language of medical science for centuries. Mastering this terminology is a mandatory stage in the training of medical specialists, and its unification contributes to effective interdisciplinary communication in the international space.
Over the 125-year period of existence of Odessa National Medical University, rich practical experience has been accumulated; a large team of scientists, both physicians and philologists, worked on the dictionary.
The dictionary will be a useful tool for a wide range of users – for medical students, foreign students, teachers, scientists, postgraduates, and health care professionals. The publication will contribute to a deeper understanding of the scientific style, the formation of professional speech, and the development of professional communication in the Ukrainian-speaking and international medical environment.
The “Ukrainian-English Explanatory Dictionary of Medical Terms” in the new edition is a valuable lexicographic work that continues the tradition of Ukrainian medical lexicography. Its appearance at the current stage of development of medical education in Ukraine is significant and extremely significant.
