The First Intensive Course of Thematic Advanced Training for Doctors “Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery”

From November 22 to November 24, 2017, the first intensive course of thematic advanced training for doctors “Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery” was held at the Interdepartmental Simulation Training Center of Odessa National Medical University in collaboration with Kyiv Center of Surgical Innovation.

Our training center combines the robotic and endoscopic surgery departments, simulation medicine department, obstetrics and gynecology department number 1 and the department of general and military surgery.

During the course, 10 students from Uzhgorod and Odesa attended lectures, took part in operations in both surgical departments of the Multidisciplinary Medical Center of the University Clinic (operations were performed by prof. V.Ye. Vansovich, prof. M.A. Kashtaljan, d.m.s. A.V. Malinovsky), had a practical training on the virtual simulator LapMentor (Symbionics) and on Training Boxes LapTrainer (LapSim) at the Department of Simulation Medicine.

An intensive course, as it is customary at similar courses in Europe, involves work for 8-10 hours involving trainees in all types of training. For example, on the first day, the trainees spent about 3 hours on the simulators, attended 3 operations and only at the end of the day listened to a lecture. And on the third day, all the trainees could perform laparoscopic cholecystectomy operations on the LapMentor simulator from the beginning to the end on their own.

On completion of this course, all the trainees received certificates and assessed the practical skills and theoretical knowledge gained during the intensive course as very productive.

An important feature of the course trainees’ assistance in operations. We are planning to continue this practice, which is commonly used at similar foreign courses, in the future. After all, the training center plans to conduct a basic intensive course on a regular basis, as well as specialized courses involving the leading specialists of our universities, Kyiv and foreign clinics.

Now, the new equipment installed at the university clinics for providing high-tech medical care will be used also for qualitative training.
