Fellow of the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD)

Bogatu Svitlana Ihorivna – candidate of medical sciences, senior lecturer of the department of pharmacology and pharmacognosy of Odesa National Medical University  received a scholarship to conduct research at one of the oldest universities in Germany – the University of Greifswald (Greifswald, Germany) as part of the DAAD scholarship program aimed at supporting Ukrainian scientists.

Field of scientific interests of Bogatu S.I. is located at the junction of specialties – stomatology and pharmacy. At this stage, scientific research is devoted to the search for natural compounds of plant origin (medicinal plants of Southern Ukraine), which can have antibacterial and antibiofilm properties against oral pathogens (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans), which cause the development of inflammatory diseases of the periodontium and peri-implant tissues – periodontitis and peri-implantitis, and also provoke and worsen the course of such somatic pathology as diabetes, atherosclerosis, cardiovascular pathology, Alzheimer’s disease, etc.

The prevalence of inflammatory periodontal diseases among the population of Ukraine, depending on the region, is 93-95%, every year these diseases affect younger and younger groups of the population, causing tooth loss, disorders of the maxillofacial system, leading to digestion problems, causing diction and aesthetics disorders, which  affects the psychological state of a person, disrupting his social ties, preventing certain types of work. Thus, periodontal disease is an important medical and social problem today, the solution of which is an urgent task of modern medicine and pharmacy.

The prospects of this scientific work are great, the results of which can be used to create a new plant-based medicine for the oral cavity, which will be used in the complex treatment of inflammatory diseases of the periodontium and peri-implant tissues. The use of natural compounds of plant origin in the composition of such a medicinal product will allow to overcome the existing antibiotic resistance of oral pathogens and reduce the negative impact on the human body as a whole.

Within the framework of this topic on the study of antibacterial properties of natural compounds of plant origin, cooperation has been established with international partners – the Department of Pharmaceutical Biology of the University of Greifswald (Germany).

We congratulate Bogata S.I. and the department of pharmacology and pharmacognosy (head – prof. Rozhkovskiy J.V.) to the significant scientific achievements. We wish you strength and inspiration for the implementation of all scientific projects.

With faith in Victory! Everything will be Ukraine!
