On October 1, 2024, on the occasion of the Day of Defenders of Ukraine, head of Department of Social Sciences Olha Sikorska and Associate Professor Tetiana Podkupko organized excursions to Odesa Historical and Local History Museum. Our indomitable higher education seekers were able to visit one of the best local history museums of Ukraine, going from shelter to shelter in the breaks between alarms. It is located in the center of Odessa in a palace-type building built in 1876 according to the project of the famous Odessa architect Felix Gonsiorovskyi.
The mansion was built for one of the representatives of the industrial and commercial elite of that time – Oleksandr Yakovych Novikov. Until 1899, the mansion was known in Odessa as “Novikov’s house”. At the beginning of the 20th century it was purchased by the city government. For the first time, the museum exposition was placed here in 1948.
The museum’s funds include about 120,000 storage units, including collections of numismatic, historical and household objects, weapons, graphics, fine art, documents, photographs, etc. Manifestos, decrees, documents of the middle of the 18th and 19th centuries are unique. The exposition introduces the history of Odesa from the Middle Ages to the 21st century.
The exhibition of weapons caused the greatest admiration among the higher education seekers. Here are presented rare and unique samples of armor, the first types of cold and firearms.
There is also an exhibition devoted to our modern defenders. Since 2014, the Museum’s collections have been replenished with trophies and relics of the newest Heroes.
National-patriotic, educational work is maximally effective due to the opportunity to visit various museums, exhibitions, expositions, libraries, etc. On the festive day in the Odesa Historical and Local History Museum, the higher education seekers had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the times of the struggle for Ukraine’s independence in the past, to bow their heads with gratitude to those who protect us today. We remember – we win!
