100 Outstanding Graduates (Stefanov Oleksandr Viktorovych)

Stefanov Oleksandr Viktorovych is a doctor of biological sciences, professor, academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine, Director of the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine; Headed the state enterprise “State Pharmacological Center” of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
After graduating from Odessa Medical Institute named after M.I.Pirogov Oleksandr Viktorovych was a physician-therapist at the district hospital and at the same time he engaged in scientific research. In 1975 he defended his Ph.D. thesis on pharmacological action of proteolytic enzymes inhibitors.
Oleksandr Viktorovych worked at the Institute of Physiology named after O. O. Bohomolets and the Institute of Biochemistry named after O. Palladin – on the problems of Neurophysiology and Biochemistry of biological membranes. In 1988 he defended his doctoral dissertation devoted to the fundamental research of liposomes. The establishment of the fundamental laws of the influence of liposomes on living cells was a significant contribution of the professor to the medical and pharmacological science. It served as a solid basis for the creation and antihypoxic-antioxidant drug lipins – the world’s first industrially developed liposomal drug. The development and clinical application of drugs lipins and lelodils are among the first real successes of the world liposomotherapy.
In the future, O.V. Stefanov was the director of the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, where he also headed the Department of Experimental Therapy; He headed the State Enterprise “State Pharmacological Center”; was the president of the All-Ukrainian public organization “Association of Pharmacologists of Ukraine”, chairman of the interdepartmental problem committee “Pharmacology”; a member of the scientific council of the Presidium of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, the chairman of the expert council of the State Commission for Academic Degrees and Titles of Ukraine in the Medical Biology and Pharmacy, the chief editor of the scientific journals “Lika” and “Bulletin of Pharmacology and Pharmacy”, a member of editorial boards of a number of other professional editions in Ukraine and the Russian Federation.
It was him who initiated the introduction of the principles of the international GLP system in Ukraine in the preclinical study of drugs.
Oleksandr Viktorovych is the author of more than 300 scientific papers, including 24 patents, has prepared 3 doctors and 8 candidates of sciences.
O.V Stefanov is an example of a person who devoted his entire life to science.
