Recently, a 1st-year student of the 3rd group of the ONMedU Faculty of Dentistry, Artem MAKARENKO, was cited by the Main Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Odesa region for his active and conscious civic position, high level of safety knowledge, and decisive actions taken during a fire in one of the high rise buildings in Odesa.
The fire broke out on November 18, 2024 in a house on Gagarinskoye Plateau, 5-a. Artem was in the hall of the house with friends when an elderly woman ran out of the apartment shouting: “Fire!” Without a second’s hesitation, the guys went to the apartment, where the entire corridor was already covered in smoke, and it was impossible to breathe. Another resident of the apartment with a child was barely able to stand. The young people helped them get out onto the street via the fire escape.
“When we returned to the apartment,” recalls Artem, “we saw that everything was already on fire: the bed and the curtains. The security guard and me started to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher, although it didn’t work well because air was coming into the room through the broken window, but we didn’t stop fighting the fire. Fortunately, at that moment the firefighters arrived and put out the fire, and in the meantime we were taking people out of the neighboring apartments.
We are proud of Artem’s heroic act, who didn’t lose his mind in an emergency and did everything possible to save people. In this worrying time, when due to constant shelling and explosions, each of us can find ourselves in trouble, it is very important to have caring, brave and determined people nearby — people like Artem Makarenko and his friends.
These qualities are necessary for every doctor! We are confident that Artem will become an excellent doctor, who will have compassion and mercy for patients, as well as the ability to take honest and decisive actions to save their lives and health.
