The Day of National Unity is celebrated on the day of the proclamation in 1919 of the Act of Union of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic. Let us also recall another important historical event — the proclamation of independence of the Ukrainian People’s Republic from Russia, which took place on this day, but a year earlier — January 22, 1918.
These historical facts completely destroy the claims of Russian propaganda that the Ukrainian state did not exist and that it was created by Lenin.
The Act of Union became an event of historical significance — the unification of Ukrainian lands into one state and crowned the unionist aspirations of both parts of the country — western and eastern, which had long been divided by the borders of the then empires, and is a fundamental milestone in Ukrainian statehood.
Unfortunately, due to the failure of the Ukrainian revolution of 1917–1921, statehood could not be preserved. And in the 20th century, Ukrainians continued to fight for their independence, which was proclaimed on August 24, 1991.
Years of struggle for the right to be an independent, free, sovereign state awaited our country. Finally, the goal was achieved, 30 years of development… hopes for the further prosperity of Ukraine were dashed by the aggressive attack of neighboring Russia, which aimed to take away Ukrainian lands, destroy our state and the identity of the Ukrainian people, its history.
Currently, our eastern regions and Crimea are under occupation. A fierce struggle with the enemy continues to throw them out of Ukraine forever.
Today, 106 years after the proclamation of the Act of Union, Ukrainians are united in their desire to defend their state. The idea of unity was and remains a basic national value. This is our common goal, with which we have been living for three years of this cruel bloody war, our faith and hope!
Let us unite!
