April 2 — Autism Awareness Day

According to WHO estimates, 1 in 160 children has autism spectrum disorders. In total, there are 2 million 400 thousand people with similar disorders in the world. In Ukraine, in 2024, the number of diagnosed autism increased by 3.8% compared to 2020.

The war affected every Ukrainian family. According to statistics, 95% of Ukrainians need psychological and psychiatric help. However, those who had mental health problems before the war and need more attention from specialists and society remained more vulnerable.

Members of the SSS of the Department of Psychiatry, Narcology and Medical Psychology of ONMedU spent a day in the children’s department of the Mental Health Center, where children with a diagnosis of autism are located. Together they drew, molded plasticine figures, and made movements to music. These extremely talented and strange people do not have social adaptation skills. It is impossible for them to ride a tram, go to a supermarket, or seek medical help without outside support. Most people with autism do not have friends, even on social networks.

And it should not be like this, because every person deserves a decent life and has the right to happiness, regardless of their health status. Children with mental disabilities have the right to live a normal, interesting life, instead of being isolated in their homes.

Students of  Odessa National Medical University, members of the SSS of the Department of Psychiatry, Narcology, and Medical Psychology, in 2020 decided to take patronage of the children’s department of the Mental Health Center. Learn together, develop together, together to Victory. With care for the mental health of every Ukrainian!
