“Heroes don’t die…”

On August 29, 2024, a round table was held at the Department of Social Sciences: “Heroes do not die…” on the occasion of commemorating the Day of Remembrance of Defenders of Ukraine, who died in the struggle for independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. The event was moderated by the head of the department, Ph.D., Assoc. Prof. Olha Sikorska. She told about the main milestones of the events of 10 years ago, as well as that the state started the Memorial Day in 2019 for the dignified honoring of servicemen and members of volunteer formations who gave their lives for Ukraine, perpetuating their heroism, civic courage, resilience and dedication.

After honoring the memory of the victims with a moment of silence, the audience listened to two reports.

Doctor of Political Science, Assoc. Prof. Mykola Kulachynskyi outlined the importance of self-identification in the struggle for Ukrainian statehood at various stages: from Bohdan Khmelnytskyi (mid-17th century) to the time of the Liberation Struggles of 1917-1920s. The speaker also emphasized the importance and influence of the global political situation on the development and results of Ukrainian statehood.

Doctor of Science, Assoc. Prof. Tetyana Podkupko outlined the main problems of covering the heroic events of the history of Ukraine during the full-scale invasion of Russia on the territory of our Motherland. She also raised the difficult issue of perpetuating the names of the Heroes in the toponymy of Odesa.

The present representatives of various departments of ONMedU took part in the discussion and of urgent issues of honoring the memory of Heroes, not only on August 29, but constantly. It is thanks to our defenders that we work, study and live! Heroes don’t die! Eternal glory and memory!
