On Wednesday, 21.10.20, at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Head – Professor Igor Zinoviiovych Gladchuk) another event “Speaking Club: Challenging patient consultation” was held with the participation of foreign and Ukrainian students online on Microsoft Teams platform!
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has initiated and holds regular discussion meetings in English in obstetrics and gynecology for domestic and foreign students.
The management of the University, Training and Production Complex of Innovative Technologies of Teaching, Informatization, Continuing Education and Internal Monitoring of Education Quality of Odessa National Medical University (TPC ITTIMEQ) and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology have created all conditions for comfortable communication and exchange of views on Microsoft Teams platform.
Professor of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Alla Heorghiivna Volyanska greeted the participants of the discussion club and wished them fruitful work.
The first part of the work process began with the announcement of the Agenda of the day, which was agreed at the last meeting, and A. Dobrovolsky’s introductory report “CHALLENGING CONVERSATIONS: HOW TO PREVENT PHYSICIAN’S BURNOUT”, which revealed the importance of the event from a practical point of view to the participants.
The next stage, which provoked a lively discussion and a lot of positive emotions from the audience, was the joint work of students and experts in practical cases:
Case # 1 Situation in hospital. (A patient’s husband visited the ward where his wife slept after the operation. There is a fresh cut on the woman’s head. “What the hell is going on here? During the discussion, each student had an opportunity to express their point of view to the audience, and then work out the case side by side with experts. The analysis of situations was supplemented by reports “PATIENT PSYCHOTYPES: HOW TO CHOOSE THE MOST CORRESPONDING MODEL OF CONVERSATIONATION” and “good” bedside manner ” by Andrew Dobrovolsky.
After a short coffee break, Speaking Club members moved on to the second part of the job – developing bad news skills. Gopika Suresh gave a great introductory presentation on the topic: “SPIKES PROTOCOL”, thus starting the monthly case analysis cycle on this topic.
Students together with teachers of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and honored guests – Larysa Yevheniivna Kaplina, Associate Professor of the Department of Pediatrics #1, Viktor Serhiiovych Biriukov, Associate Professor of the Department of Pediatrics #1 and assistant of the Department of Internal Medicine №3 Tretiachenko Yurii Volodymyrovych tried to find answers to such difficult questions during the emotional discussion
Mastering (learning, mastering) foreign languages at the level of free communication occupies a leading position in the strategy of integration of Ukrainian medical students and young scientists into the international scientific community. The ability to participate in discussions, formulate and defend one’s point of view using modern international medical terminology helps to improve communication skills of future doctors.
The opportunity for free online communication on problematic issues received very positive feedback from the student community and opened new horizons for future meetings.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and TPC ITTIMEQ sincerely invites everyone to join the next meetings of the discussion club!
