Environment Day is celebrated in Ukraine every year on the third Saturday of April. This holiday was celebrated for the first time in 1999, and it was initiated by the All-Ukrainian action “Tree – Life”, which was introduced in 1997 with the aim of beautification and greening of cities and villages of Ukraine.
Initially, the holiday was planned to be held in honor of the Stockholm Conference on the Environment in 1972, as a result of which a declaration was adopted that approved the basic principles of environmental protection.
Since then, events have been held every year that emphasize the importance of nature conservation: trees, bushes, and flowers are planted, natural garbage dumps are cleaned, parks and squares are renewed after the cold weather, and water bodies are cleaned. This also includes a conscious attitude to the separate collection of garbage, the use of ecological packages in supermarkets as often as possible, efforts not to pollute holiday towns.
These measures are, as it were, attributes of a peaceful and calm life, which we lived until recently. And now a large part of the territory of our country is mutilated by shells, dug up by trenches, destroyed by the enemy.
But today, Environment Day has another meaning. We need not only to clean the surrounding space, take care of the cleanliness of the air and water, but also drive away uninvited guests from our territory. Let them return home and not pollute our environment with their presence!
