Horizontal integration in action

At the end of the current academic year (05/27/2025), a joint meeting of student scientific circles of the departments of obstetrics and gynecology and general, military and pediatric surgery, with a course in urology and ophthalmology, was held.

This format of interdisciplinary interaction is not implemented for the first time and is of interest to higher education students. It allows us to consider clinical topics from different perspectives, forming a holistic vision of complex interdisciplinary clinical situations in students. The topic of the meeting this time was “Acute abdomen”. This interdisciplinary clinical problem covers urgent conditions in both surgery and gynecology.

The meeting was opened by the heads of departments: GLADCHUK Ihor, MD, prof., head of the department of obstetrics and gynecology; KASHTALIAN Mykhailo, MD, prof., head of the department of general, military and pediatric surgery with a course in urology and ophthalmology.

In a joint address to those present, the professors emphasized the importance of holding such interdepartmental events that contribute not only to the integration of knowledge, but also to the formation of professional responsibility and scientific interest in young students. They emphasized that participation in the work of the CIS is an integral part of the training of a modern doctor, because it is here that the foundations of clinical thinking, the ability to critically analyze complex situations and work in a multidisciplinary team are laid. The heads also expressed their confidence that such meetings motivate applicants to in-depth study of the specialty, develop their own potential and consistent professional growth.

The program included topical reports: KASHTALIAN Mykhailo et al.— “Combat trauma of the colon and small pelvis”; STEPANOVICHUS Olena, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Scientific Director of the Circle – “Operational Laparoscopy in Emergencies in Gynecology”.

The following members of the circle also made reports: CHEKHANOV Oleksandr (higher education student, 2nd year) – “Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome”; TYSHCHENKO Anastasia (higher education seeker 4th year) – “Cervical Pregnancy”; KIRYAKOVA Darya (head of the circle of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, higher education student, 5th year) – clinical case “Pregnancy in the scar niche after cesarean section”.

This meeting was really interesting, informative and extremely useful for all participants. Discussion of important clinical issues, speeches by applicants and doctors, lively professional dialogue – all this created an atmosphere of active learning, development and interaction. Participation in the CIS of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is not only a valuable opportunity to deepen knowledge, but also a real step towards professional development. Higher education seekers already during their studies have the opportunity to get involved in scientific projects, work under the guidance of experienced mentors, participate in conferences, and gain their first practical experience working with doctors in university clinics and maternity hospitals. Participation in the circle is also a career guidance platform for a conscious choice of further education in internship and postgraduate studies. We thank all participants for their activity, concern and professional interest. See you soon in the new academic year!
