On August 12, the world celebrates International Youth Day. This official holiday was introduced in 1999 by the UN General Assembly following the results of the World Conference of Ministers on Youth, held in Lisbon in 1998. Since then, every year on this day, attention is drawn to the role of the younger generation in society, their needs, initiatives, as well as the problems faced by young people in different countries. Special emphasis is placed on promoting the participation of young people in political, economic, cultural and public life.
In Ukraine, Youth Day was celebrated in the last week of June for a long time. However, in 2021, the President of Ukraine signed a decree establishing a new date for the celebration – August 12. In 2022, Youth Day in Ukraine was officially merged with the International Youth Day. This decision became a symbolic step towards the global community and at the same time a reflection of the value choice of Ukrainian society. The transition to a common date allowed us to emphasize solidarity with the youth of other countries, to actualize the issues of young people’s rights, and to expand the context of recognizing their contribution to the development of the state.
However, it was since 2022, when Ukraine faced full-scale armed aggression, that youth ceased to be perceived exclusively as the future of the state – they became its active and irreplaceable resource in the present. Young people joined the defense of the state, became part of volunteer and humanitarian initiatives, they ensure the sustainability of the educational process, support their communities, are engaged in documenting war crimes, help internally displaced persons, and participate in medical and psychological support for victims. A significant part of young Ukrainians combines volunteering or service with the continuation of the educational process despite risks, power outages, air raids, and evacuations. Young people demonstrate adaptability, independence, the ability to mobilize resources, and a willingness to support others.
Part of Ukrainian youth are graduates of Odesa National Medical University. These are those who have chosen a profession that requires high responsibility, resilience and humanity. Our students continue their studies in wartime, participate in volunteer initiatives, help doctors in clinics and hospitals, and participate in scientific developments that can have practical value for the healthcare system.
ONMedU is sincerely proud of its students and wishes them faith in themselves, inner strength, professional growth, support from loved ones and inspiration for every day.
May your dreams come true, and the path to them be bright and dignified!
Happy holiday, dear youth!
