“Light of Memory”: Vitaliy Synenko

Pediatrician, embryologist, candidate of medical sciences, lecturer at Odessa National Medical University. Husband, father. Head of the battalion  of medical service. This is how his short life path can be reflected. Vitaliy Synenko was born in 1983 in Odessa, into a family of doctors. His mother Lyudmila Evheniivna is a therapist. Father Volodymyr Ivanovych is an associate professor at the Department of Family Medicine of ONMedU. Vitaliy received his secondary education first at secondary school No. 64 in Odessa (grades 1–4), and then at secondary school No. 89 (grades 5–11). He was always a diligent, responsible student, took his studies very seriously, had excellent grades in chemistry, biology, history, and literature. In his free time, he was fond of chess, astronomy, music, played the guitar, and loved fishing. After graduating from school, he decided, like his parents, to devote himself to medicine, to continue the family dynasty, and immediately entered Odessa State Medical University, which he graduated with a degree in Pediatrics in 2006. Then he continued his education in this specialty during internship and clinical residency. From 2010 to 2013, he worked as a doctor in the pediatrics department of the city children’s hospital No. 2. In 2011, he completed a specialization in embryology at the Regional Clinical Hospital in Kharkiv. In 2013, he entered postgraduate study at the Department of Pediatrics No. 2 of ONMedU. From 2016 to 2022, he was an assistant at this department, conducting classes with foreign students in English. In addition to his talent as a lecturer and impeccable mastery of the material, he impressed higher education seekers with his good humor, friendly smile and friendliness.

Vitaliy participated in many scientific conferences in Ukraine and abroad. He continued tomaster his skills in the field of embryology, taking courses both in Ukraine and in foreign countries (Belgium, Denmark, Israel, the Netherlands). Since 2011, Vitaliy Sinenko was a member of the Union of Embryologists of Ukraine, a member of the Association of Reproductive Medicine of Ukraine, and the European Association of Human Reproduction and Embryology. He combined the work of a doctor, a university lecturer with the work of an embryologist in Odesa clinics.

He started a family and raised a daughter. In 2021, he received the degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences, successfully defending his dissertation “Psychophysical Development and Peculiarities of Bioenergetic Metabolism in Children Born as a Result of Assisted Reproductive Technologies”. Having received an offer from a Kyiv institution, he began working as an embryologist at the Dobrobut Clinic on February 1, 2022.

His professional career was developing successfully, but this damn war, which destroyed the lives and destinies of millions of Ukrainians, also affected Vitaliy… In the first weeks of February 2022, he continued to support the vital activity of fertilized embryos in the reproductive medicine clinic and every day he walked, under rocket fire, to two laboratories of the Dobrobut network (all employees left one of them) to carry out the necessary procedures and enable married couples to become parents. It is currently known that at least one child was born from these embryos.

Since February 24, 2022, as part of the stabilization hospital, he provided medical assistance to the wounded and evacuating civilians from the settlements of the suburbs of Kyiv — Gostomel, Irpin, Bucha.

And in March, Vitaliy voluntarily joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. No one doubted that he would do just that, because Vitaliy and his family always had a patriotic position. He received the rank of lieutenant and the position of chief of the medical service of the 243rd battalion of the 241st brigade of the TDF of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. As part of this battalion, he twice, with a break for rotation, participated in combat operations in the Bakhmut area. Those were extremely difficult times, but Vitaliy coped with everything, always rushed to help the wounded, and after the soldier got better, he was always interested in his further well-being. He organized the evacuation schemes of the wounded, the work of stabilization points, achieved minimal mortality among the fighters. He constantly conducted trainings with personnel on providing primary medical aid. He raised funds and invested his own in the purchase of additional vehicles for the battalion’s medical service, including mobile stabilization points, which helped reduce the evacuation time from the front line to ten minutes and save the lives of many fighters.

For the conscientious performance of his duties, personal diligence, resilience, and high professionalism, Vitaliy Synenko received thanks and was awarded certificates from the command and local authorities. From the command of the Territorial Defense Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, he was awarded the medal “For Faithful Service” and the cross “Honor and Glory”.

On May 16, 2023, he was once again carrying wounded soldiers from the front line of Bakhmut. Suddenly, shelling began. The occupiers hit the car with the red cross… Vitaliy was the only one who was mortally wounded. By Decree of the President of Ukraine No. 184/2024 of March 26, 2024, for personal courage shown in protecting the state sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, selfless performance of military duty, Vitaliy Synenko was awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, III degree (posthumously). The leadership of the 241st Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Odessa National Medical University, the Department of Health Care of the Odessa City Council, and the Family Medicine Association of the Odessa Region appealed to the Odessa City Council with a request to perpetuate the memory of Vitaliy Synenko by renaming one of the toponymic objects of the city after him.

On October 17, 2024, a memorial board was unveiled at School 89 of the Kyiv District of Odessa to the school graduate, Hero Vitaliy Synenko.

In the memory of all who knew Vitaliy, he will remain a sincere, decent, bright person. He could have done so much good in this world…

Eternal memory to the Hero!
