On November 1, Kyiv hosted a presentation of a manual for educators with materials for the course “General practice – family medicine”, developed as part of the Ukrainian-Swiss project “Development of medical education”.
The event gathered almost three thousand participants from different parts of Ukraine, who joined the presentation in offline and online formats. Vice-rector for scientific and pedagogical work, associate professor Eduard Buryachkivskyi and the head of the department of family medicine, general practice and polyclinic therapy, professor Valentyna Velychko were present from Odesa National Medical University.
In his welcoming speech, Serhii Ubogov, head of the Department of Medical Personnel, Education and Science of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, noted the importance of the event for the development of primary care in Ukraine and the introduction of new approaches in the training of future family doctors.
The manual “General practice – family medicine” for educators of higher education institutions training specialists in the field of knowledge “Health care” was developed by a working group of authors, among whom there are both practitioners of general practice and family medicine and university teachers. It contains educational and methodological materials for students of the course “General practice – family medicine” and is an important step towards changes in the training of future family doctors and popularization of the specialty of general practice doctor – family medicine. It highlights the competencies that will be mastered during the course, educational goals, thematic plan, and also contains educational materials for each lesson, including descriptions of practical tasks, educational cases, simulation scenarios, and test tasks. In addition, the publication offers recommendations on the use of certain formats, conducting checkin, brainstorming or working with cases.
During the event, the results of a recent analysis of the state of teaching of the “General Practice – Family Medicine” course in higher education institutions were also presented, and a panel discussion was held on how to increase students’ interest in family medicine.
