Dear colleagues, I congratulate you on one of the most important holidays in Ukraine – The Science Day! Science reveals the best qualities in man, saves lives, drives the economy. Winston Churchill’s famous saying: “Science is able to expand the borders of each state without narrowing the borders of neighbors, and increase the welfare of each nation without taking anything from others.”
Unfortunately, science in Ukraine has been stagnant for many years. The strongest minds leave the country and build other economies. Terrible statistics: during the years of independence, the number of scientists in Ukraine has tripled. Everyone knows the reason – the state is waiting for the money to develop science, not seeing that science is the source of national enrichment! We desperately need to reconsider the support of the industry, because countries in which science is funded on a residual basis do not succeed.
And although we scientists often have to act not because of, but in spite of, we have achieved good results and we have something to be proud of. By joint efforts we were able to turn Odessa National Medical University into a scientific hub of the South of Ukraine. We continue the work of our outstanding teachers, develop scientific schools, encourage young people to science, make a huge contribution to building the future of our country. The university has 695 professors and candidates of science. We are proud of your work!
On the Science Day, I wish wisdom and development to our state. I wish all scientists of Ukraine creative inspiration, good health and confidence in the future. I want your names to be known throughout the country, for your efforts to be well rewarded, for you to be in demand and competitive.
I would like to address young specialists particularly. You are our pride and our hope for a better future of Ukraine. Be inquisitive, persistent, confident and always remember the words of Michael Faraday: Science wins when its wings are unleashed by imagination!
Sincerely yours, Rector and Chairman of the Academic Council of ONMedU Academician Valeriy Zaporozhan
