Scientific internship in Greifswald: inspiring Ukrainian experience

Over the past two years, Associate Professor of the Department of General and Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy Svitlana Ihorivna Bogatu has completed a scientific and pedagogical internship at the Department of Pharmaceutical Biology of the University of Greifswald (Greifswald, Germany). The internship took place within the framework of the prestigious scholarship program of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), which supports international cooperation in the field of science and education.

Svitlana Ihorivna has established herself as a high-class specialist with deep knowledge in the field of pharmaceutical botany and pharmacognosy. She conducted practical classes in pharmaceutical botany and pharmacognosy, methods of phytochemical analysis and in a short period of time mastered the European experience of organizing the educational process at the specialized department of the university.

Her participation in joint research, seminars and the educational process made a positive impression on her German colleagues. Ukrainian approaches to pharmacognostic analysis of medicinal plants and the use of phytotherapy in practical medicine aroused particular interest. But even more, Svitlana Ihorivna impressed the German academic community with her sincerity, openness and deep love for Ukrainian traditions. She not only introduced her colleagues to the cultural features of Ukraine, but also turned this interaction into a real cultural journey.

As part of her internship, Svitlana Ihorivna organized an introduction to Ukrainian winter holidays for the employees of the Department of Pharmaceutical Biology. In particular, a special response was caused by the story about the traditions of celebrating Malanka and Vasyl – with carols, schedrivka and festive treats. These events were very popular. The teacher also introduced her German colleagues to Ukrainian Christmas and New Year customs: cooking kuty, lighting the first star, carol singing, and sincere wishes for the New Year. They heard Ukrainian carols live for the first time, felt the warm atmosphere of our Christmas and even tried national dishes – borscht, varenyky, uzvar and aromatic herbal teas.

Svitlana Ihorivna Bohat’s internship was not only an academic exchange of experience, but also an example of cultural diplomacy in action. This is scientific cooperation based on mutual respect, intellectual partnership and sincere human communication. The department staff is proud of the achievements of their colleague and believes that such initiatives are the key to strong international partnership in the future.
