History of the Department

The Department of Philosophy and Bioethics
It was started at Novorossiisk University, where such prominent scientists worked as:

M. Ya. Lange – translator of Aristotle’s works, founder of the first psychological laboratory in Ukraine (1895).

G. V. Florovsky – an outstanding philosopher, culturologist and historian.

L. V. Gromashevsky – an academician with a significant contribution to science.

In the 1920s and 1930s, the teaching of philosophy was replaced by ideologized courses on dialectical materialism and Marxism-Leninism. After the liberation of Odesa from the German occupiers, the department resumed its activities, in particular through methodological seminars for teachers.

Key periods of development
1950s–1970s
The scientific direction of the department is “Philosophical Problems of Medicine”. Among the prominent leaders are:
G. I. Dyachenko, V. M. Zhukova, F. M. Pryduvalov – researcher of the socio-ethical principles of Orthodoxy.

Yu. M. Stempursky – created a methodological center at the medical institute.

1980–1990s
The department was headed by:
V. A. Voychuk, L. M. Roskolotko – researcher of philosophical problems of natural science.

I. V. Yershova-Babenko – Doctor of Philosophy, founder of the scientific directions “psychosynergetics” and “alphalogy”, organizer of international conferences and practical schools.

Current period
Since 2015, the department has been headed by V. B. Khanzhy, Doctor of Philosophy. The department’s staff includes specialists in philosophy, psychology and law.
Scientific and educational activities
Scientific projects:

Anthropological research in the post-nonclassical paradigm (2021–2025).
Annual conference “Man as Integrity”.
Seminar named after Prof. A. Yu. Tsofnas.
Achievements:
Organization of the first All-Ukrainian Psychology Olympiad (2016).
Holding conferences on issues of holistic human health.
The department actively cooperates with international organizations, supports student initiatives and promotes the development of young scientists.

History of the Department of Foreign Languages
The Department of Foreign Languages was established in 1927 and initially included 9 employees.

V.A. Lupanov (1932–1941, 1944–1957) is an outstanding linguist, author of 11 scientific and methodological works, including a textbook on Latin for medical universities.

N.E. Zaporozhchenko (1957–1972) is a candidate of philological sciences, associate professor, worked at the department for about 40 years.

D.V. Malyavin (1972–1977) – organized an interuniversity conference of medical institutes of Ukraine.

V.G. Shatukh (1977–1986), V.M. Inozemtseva (1986–1987), K.B. Zaitseva (1987–1992).

From 1992-2022, the department was headed by G.G. Yeremkina, Candidate of Philological Sciences, Associate Professor.

Scientific activity
Main areas:

Problems of terminological lexicography.
Development of methods for teaching language activity with an emphasis on terminology.
Scientific projects:
Research of medical terminology, in particular abbreviations, based on the material of English, French, German, Latin, Russian and Ukrainian languages (1992–1995).
Creation of terminological dictionaries, including “A Brief Dictionary of Medical and Biological Terms”, “English-Ukrainian Dictionary of Medical Terms”, etc.
Achievements:
Conducting the All-Ukrainian Olympiad in Foreign Languages (1994).
Seminar-meeting of heads of departments of foreign languages (1995, 2010).
International cooperation:
Teachers of the department participate in international conferences, researching issues of functional linguistics, terminology and language culture.

In 2022, the departments were combined under the leadership of Prof. Volodymyr Borisovych Khanzhy and the new department was named “Department of Philosophy, Bioethics and Foreign Languages”
