Doctor Liviu Oprea (MD, PhD) – an associate professor at the Department of Bioethics at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy ” Grigore T. Popa University ” in Iasi, Romania.
Dr. Oprea received education at Kostache Negruztsi College, Victor Babesha University of Medicine (Romania), University of Adelaide (Australia, PhD) and at Case Western Reserve University (the USA, Master of Art).
Dr. Liviu Oprea specializes in such areas as bioethics, health policy, qualitative research, public health, medical education, family medicine, healthcare management, ethics in education, and the healthcare economy.
At present, bioethics is the main branch of his work and scientific interests. He has extensive experience in conducting qualitative research on the relationship between a doctor and a patient. The direction of his special scientific interests is the ethical issues that arise in the primary treatment of chronic diseases, and the ethics of public health.
Dr. Oprea also has experience in the Center for Long-Term Medical Research (where he served as Executive Director) and the Center for Family Medicine at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy ” Grigore T. Popa University “, and the experience of teaching interdisciplinary courses in clinical ethics, ethics in public health Bioethics and behavioral sciences for medical students and undergraduate students.
Dr. Oprea is the executive editor of the Romanian Bioethics Journal (RRB). The RRB is an internationally reviewed academic journal devoted to contemporary bioethical issues. It is indexed by Thomson Reuters since 2007 and currently has an impact factor of 1.17.
Dr. Liviu Oprea is actively involved in the CHRONEX-RD project, an Eastern European program for the improvement and development of research in chronic diseases. The CHRONEX-RD program is a joint project of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy ” Grigore T. Popa University ” in Iasi, Romania, the State University of Medicine and Pharmacy named after Nicolae Testimitsian in Chisinau, Moldova, and Odessa National Medical University.
This project aims to promote the economic growth of the region, including the territories of Ukraine, Romania and Moldova. It sets a goal to integrate and consolidate regional academic opportunities and to create an information network for the exchange of best practices for the treatment of chronic diseases, and to build capacity for interdisciplinary integration in research and development in education and medical practice.
The three universities involved in this project fulfill complementary roles in its implementation in the three countries. At the planning stage of the project, teams from the 3 major institutions of the network periodically met and worked closely together to create a plan for specific actions and to implement it jointly. With the support and assistance of Dr. Liviu Oprea, a number of employees of Odessa National Medical University have undergone professional training under the CHRONEX-RD program.
