Doctor I.I. Ababiy (Rector of Nicolae Testemițanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Chișinău, Moldova)

Dr. Ion Ababiy is an ENT doctor, he was elected a correspondent member (1993), and then a member of the Academy of Sciences (2000).  He is a rector of the State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Nicolae Testemitsanu in Chisinau (where he studied) and served as a Minister of Health of Moldova in 2005-2008.

Having started his professional life as a therapist and otolaryngologist at the Streshen Hospital, he specialized in otorhinolaryngology at the Research Institute in Moscow, having received a doctor’s degree in 1972. He worked at the State Medical Institute in Chisinau as a lecturer at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, he received  Professorship in 1989.

In recognition of the scientific work conducted by Ion Ababiy, he was elected a member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, first as a Corresponding Member (1993), and then as its member (2000). In addition, he was elected an honorary member of the Academy of Sciences in Poland and Finland, Honorary Member of the Academy of Otorhinolaryngology of the US Navy, Academy of Otorhinolaryngology of the Russian Federation, Russian Rhinology Society. He is the author of 367 scientific works, including 5 monographs, 4 textbooks, 30 guidelines and 17 patents. He has trained eight  candidate and one doctor of medical sciences.

In addition to the teaching and academic activities, Acad. Prof. Dr. Ion Ababiy has performed a number of administrative functions: the head of the Scientific Society of Otorhinolaryngology Practice in Moldova; a Specialist of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Moldova; a member of the High Attestation Commission of the Republic of Moldova; a member of a specialized academic council for a doctoral theses; Chairman of the Senate, Academic Council, Senate and Council of the Bureau of the State University of Medicine and Pharmacy Mykola Testemitsanu from Chisinau.
By a vote of confidence in the Parliament, the Presidential Decree of November 8, 2005 appointed him a Minister of Health and Social Protection. He was released from this position by a new government headed by Zinaida Grecian on March 31, 2008.
