Dr. Philippe Scherpereel (MD) was born in 1940. He is the Professor Emeritus of the Department of Anesthesiology at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Lille, France and a medical ombudsman at the Regional Hospital Center of the University of Lille.
In 1958-1965, Ph. Scherpereel conducted medical research at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Lille, in particular in the fields of general and molecular biochemistry, lipid biochemistry, human biology, surgery, disaster medicine, and pain management. In 1965-1970 he worked at the University Hospital of the University of Lille, and from 1968-1971 he was a research associate at the Department of Biochemistry at the same University. He defended his thesis in 1970. In 1970-1973 he worked as an assistant to the manager of the intensive care unit at the University of Lille Hospital, and in 1974-1975 – at the Department of Anesthesiology, Clinic Pute Salpetieri in Paris.
Professor Ph. Scherpereel was the head of the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at the University Hospital of the University of Lille from 1975 to 2005. During these years he actively pursued teaching at the University and received the title of Professor in 2000, and in 2005 he became a consultant on quality, risk management and professional practice assessment. From 2009 to present, he has been working as a medical ombudsman at the Regional Hospital Center of the University of Lille (CHRU). In 1988-1998, Prof. Ph. Scherpereel also conducted research in the field of medical informatics as part of joint European programs (AIM, TANIT).
Professor Ph. Scherpereel was the president of the French Society for Anesthesiology (SFAR). He founded and headed the French College of Anesthesiologists (CFAR), the European Foundation for the Education of Anesthetists (FEEA), and the European Council for Anesthesiology (EBA). He was the chairman of the Emergency Medical Assistance Section of the National University Committee. He also worked as the chairman of the National Qualification Commission for the resuscitation of patients with narcotic dependence, a member of the National Medical Certification Commission and an expert of a Court of Appeal.
Prof. Ph. Scherpereel was the last President of the Confederation of European National Societies of Anesthesiologists (CENSA) – before its joining the European Academy (EAA) for creation of the European Society for Anesthesiology (ESA). Also, recently prof. Ph. Scherpereel finished his term as the head of the Scientific Committee of the World Federation of the Society of Anesthesiologists (WFSA).
In 1990-2000 Prof. Ph. Scherpereel worked as a member of the Senate of the European Academy (E.A.A.) and its Executive Committee responsible for education. In 1998-2001, he was the vice president, and in 2002-2004, he was the President of the Confederation of European National Societies of Anesthesiologists (CENSA). He also became President of the World Congress of Anesthesiologists and Resuscitation Specialists in2004, and in 2005 – the Chairman of the Committee on European Education in Anesthesiology.
Prof. Ph. Scherpereel has a high professional reputation in the world scientific and medical community, and is a member and honorary doctor of many professional associations and associations. Among them there is the French College of Anesthesiologists and Resuscitators, the French Society of Anesthesiologists and Resuscitators, the Society of French-speaking Resuscitators, the Royal College of Anesthesiologists (ACBF), the French Society of Pain, the International Association for the Study of Pain, and others like that. He is an Honorary Member of the German Society for Anesthesiology, Bulgarian, Dutch, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Algerian, Romanian and Serbian Societies for Anesthesiology and Resuscitation.
