Dr. José Alejandro Madrigal Fernandez was born in Mexico City in 1953. He conducts investigations in the field of hematology, immunology, immunogenetics, molecular biology, and cell therapy as well as investigates and practices the transplantation of stem cells in the bone marrow in cancer treatment. His research on immunogenetics and the study of the antitumor immune response has led to numerous innovations, and this helped save the lives of many cancer patients.
Dr. José Alejandro Madrigal studied medicine at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. In 1983, he won a scholarship from the World Health Organization at Harvard University in the laboratory of Professor Edmundo-Eunice as a specialist in the field of immunology and cancer. In 1985, he received a grant from the Imperial Cancer Research Institute for doctoral research in molecular genetics at the University of London and Oxford University.
Dr. Madrigal has the qualifications of a surgeon and specialist in the field of internal medicine, transplant medicine, hematology and bone marrow transplantation, in particular from non-native donors. He is a fellow at Harvard University, a doctor at the University of London, a postdoctoral fellow on immunology at St. Bartholomew Hospital in London, a staff member of the Royal College of Medicine in England, and a staff member of the Royal College of British Pathologists, a member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of England and a Corresponding Member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences.
Dr. Madrigal is a Professor at the Royal Free Hospital and University College of Medicine in London, a full member of the American Leukosis Association, a member of the National Level III Research System in Mexico, and represents Mexico at the Royal College of Pathologists and Doctors in England. From 1993, he has been a research director at Nolan Research Institute in England and the Cancer Center of Great Britain, a member and consultant of several scientific communities and companies specializing in the medical sector. Dr. Madrigal was elected Head of the Association of European Immunologists and Specialists in Bone Marrow Transplantation.
Dr. Madrigal also heads the Department of Hematology at the Royal Free Hampstead Hospital, London University, and since 2010 he has been president of the European Group on Blood and Transplant Bone Marrow. Dr. Madrigal is the coordinator of the European Union program “AlloStem”, dedicated to the study of immunotherapy of cancer cells.
Among the awards received by Dr. Madrigal for his professional work there are awards from the World Health Organization, Harvard University, Stanford University, Israel Cancer Research Foundation, the Honorary Doctor of the University of Nottingham in the UK, Odessa National Medical University, and others. Dr. Madrigal’s actively contributes to international civil, educational and advisory activities and activities in the field of Hematology, Immunology and Molecular Biology.
