Professor Edward Malec is a graduate of the Medical Academy in Krakow (1979), which he graduated with honors from. He specializes in surgery and pediatric cardiosurgery.
In 1983 he was appointed an assistant, and in 1987 he became a senior lecturer at the Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery at Krakow Clinic. In 1997, he was appointed the Head of the Cardiac Surgery Board, and then the Head of the Polish-American Institute of Pediatrics at the Jagiellonian University. The clinic under his leadership received an international certificate of ISO quality management in the treatment of children with congenital heart diseases, conducting research and training activities for students and doctors.
In 2000-2007 Professor E.Malec was the Deputy Director of the Polish-American Institute of Pediatrics in Krakow as well as the Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery at the Jagiellonian University. In 2007-2013, he headed the Ludwig-Maximilian University Clinic of Cardiac Surgery in Munich, working with children from different countries of Europe. He performed cardiac transplantations, as well as heart-lung transplantations in children and adults with heart defects, practiced treatment and implantation of the artificial ventricle to support the work of the heart muscle. Prof. E. Malec has led numerous research programs aimed at the development of pediatric cardiosurgery.
Since January 2013, Prof. E.Malec has been the Head of the Department of Cardiac Surgery and Pediatric Surgery for Congenital Heart Diseases at the University Clinic in Münster, where he successfully corrects the most severe heart diseases and performs both heart transplantations and heart and lungs transplantations in children and adults with heart and vascular disorders.
Prof. E.Malec improved his skills in prestigious medical centers in Europe and the United States of America (including Aldo Castaneda Institute, Clinique de Genolieur, Children’s Hospital and Philadelphia Medical Center, Boston Children’s Hospital and Medical Center, National Heart Institute in Washington DC).
Prof. E.Malec has performed more than 7,000 heart operations on children with heart defects in Poland, Kazakhstan, the USA, Slovakia, Norway, Germany and Switzerland. He is a consultant of children’s cardiac surgery centers in Ukraine and Belarus. Eight specialists have received a Doctor of Medical Sciences degree, two – a doctor of medical rehabilitation under his supervision, he also trained five professional specialists in the field of cardiac cardiology.
Prof. E.Malec is the author of numerous scientific publications, a member of editorial boards and a reviewer of many scientific journals. The first textbook in Europe – a guide for parents with children with heart diseases was prepared at his initiative.
During his work in the Krakow clinic, Prof. E.Malec was the first in Poland to use mechanical blood circulation support and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in children after an operation on the heart, successfully operated a child with left ventricular hypoplasia syndrome, and started a treatment program for this defect in Poland.
Professor Edward Malec received many awards for his work on the development of pediatric cardiosurgery, and in 2002 he was awarded the European Association of Cardiac Surgery Prize. The Department of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery headed by him was ranked first in the rating of hospitals according to Newsweek. In 2013, Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski awarded Professor E.Malec an officer cross of the Polish Renaissance Order (Polonia Restitute) for outstanding achievements in pediatric cardiosurgery and help to Polish children. In 2014, Minister of Foreign Affairs Radoslaw Sikorski gave prof. E.Malec a Token of Honor “Bene Merito” for actions that significantly strengthen Poland’s position on the international scene. Professor E.Malec was also awarded the “Order of Smile” – by the rescued children from all over the world.
Professor E.Malec received an award from the Minister of National Education and Sport for the introduction of innovative methods for the treatment of cardiac hypoplasia of the left parts of the heart. He is the owner of the prestigious “Health Mission” statuette in the Scientist category, and was recognized by Focus magazine as one of the best doctors in Germany three times.
Professor E.Malec is a member of a number of scientific societies. Among them, in particular, the Polish Association of Pediatric Surgeons, the Polish Cardiosurgeons Club, the European Society for Cardiovascular Surgery, the Polish Society of Cardiac Surgeons, the American Association for Cardiac Surgery, the World Society for Pediatric Surgery and Congenital Heart Diseases, etc.
