Scientific works of Academician Valeriy Zaporozhan are a significant contribution into the evolvement of national and world medicine in the fields of reproductive health and novel technologies, such as genetics and molecular biology.

Valeriy Zaporozhan pays a lot of attention to the problem of protection and restoration of reproductive function in women with infertility, which has a dramatic relevance for the current demographic situation in Ukraine. Academician V. Zaporozhan was the pioneer in development of treatment techniques using endoscopy, cryosurgery and physical therapy, as well as in their implementation into clinical practice.

In 2011 he was elected as President of Ukrainian Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

In 1978, Valeriy Zaporozhan obtained the chairman position in the first cryosurgical center in Ukraine that specialized in treatment of precancerous conditions in gynaecology, and in 1989 he founded the first centers of family medicine and endoscopic laser surgery in the USSR. He also is the founder and the President of Ukrainian Association of Endoscopic Minimally Invasive and Laser Surgery. As a surgeon, V. Zaporozhan faultlessly mastered the techniques of the most complex surgical interventions, and he has performed over 15 thousands of interventions by now.  In 2011 he was elected as Vice-president of World Endoscopy Doctors Association (head-quarter – China, Guanchgou).

Academician V. Zaporozhan makes a significant contribution to the development of topical problems in genetics, immunology, and oncology. He initiated and successfully governs the fundamental studies of molecular genetic mechanisms of oncogenesis, pathogenetic approaches to the therapy of malignant neoplasms and prognosis of their incidence. Thanks to this work the peculiarities of genes involved in metastatic events was evaluated and creation of genetic research system necessary for individualization of disease treatment, prognosis, and prevention, were implemented for the first time in Ukraine.

In order to introduce the modern cellular technologies into clinical practice, V. Zaporozhan supports development of methods for long-term cultivation of autologous stem cells and designing the procedures for their clinical use.

Extensive scientific experience allowed him to develop new field in science – the Genetic Medicine, which was further recognized as a medical specialty. This substantially expanded the opportunities for scientific research and development of innovative molecular and genetic methods of diagnostics and treatment for socially significant diseases.

Academician V. Zaporozhan has created a new trend within the domain of Bioethics — the Nooethics. This new discipline covers the whole range of issues related to artificial intervention into the noosphere at the molecular, cellular, organism and social levels.

Valeriy Zaporozhan is a world famous scientist, founder and leader of a major research team with achievements well known to national and foreign specialists. Over 70 dissertations were defended under his guidance: 16 theses for the degree of Doctor of Sciences, and 59 — for the degree of Candidate of Sciences (the latter is a Soviet and Post-Soviet analogue of PhD degree). He authored over 550 scientific works, including 45 monographs and reference books, 69 patents and inventions.

Academician V. Zaporozhan is a talented manager of higher medical school. For more than 10 years he heads the Odessa State Medical University, and is one of initiators and managers of reformation in healthcare and doctor training. Under his management, the University has turned into a leading higher medical institution of Ukraine, where state-of-the-art technologies in educational, research and healthcare domains are implemented. This University was one of the first in Ukraine to become a member of International Association of Universities and European University Association.

The logistic basis and infrastructure of the University created during the last 10 years allow performing training of specialists at the world class level, developing scientific research, and enhancing regional healthcare system: Two University clinics were founded after Rector’s initiative for the first time in Ukraine. Among other notable achievements there are one of the first in Ukraine genetic laboratory, three scientific research institutions, 27 regional treatment-and-diagnostic centers, designed to both train highly qualified specialists and to provide high-tech medical care to people in Southern region of Ukraine. The University takes part in development and implementation of all regional healthcare programs in Odessa and Odessa Region.

These activities are significantly facilitated by close relationships of the University with leading scientific and clinical centers in Ukraine and foreign countries (over 46 Cooperation Agreements have been signed during recent years).

Personal authority and efforts of Academician V. Zaporozhan increases chances for the University Departments and individual scientists to participate in research programs and projects with Russia, Belgium, the Netherlands, the USA, Germany, Poland, Austria and Great Britain. This facilitates implementation of novel educational and medical technologies in teaching process and in healthcare.

Paying special attention to the highly qualified care in rural areas, Rector V. Zaporozhan initiated the training of specialists with “family doctor” specialty for the first time in Ukraine. For this purpose, he created Department of Family Medicine and General Practice in the University.

Odessa State Medical University was the first in Ukraine to begin training of specialists for foreign countries in English, which facilitated economic stability of the University, as well as promotion of Ukrainian education’s recognition internationally. Currently, students from over 57 countries are studying in the University.

Zaporozhan basic research were dedicated to study of hyperplastic processes and benign tumors diagnostics using endoscopic techniques, investigation of organism’s regulatory systems (immune, haemostatic, endocrine) and some enzymes. These research enabled determination of pathogenetic mechanisms of that pathology as well as finding possibilities to develop the conservative surgery for the women of reproductive age.

Zaporozhan is the leader in development of precancerous diseases treatment by combining cryosurgery with hormone, immunomodulating therapy and use of physical factors (millimeter-range electromagnetic radiation).

Rector pays special attention to publication of up-to-date educational literature for students. He created a publishing complex, which has published more than 200 titles of reference books and teaching aids in Ukrainian and English which are popular among students of all medical institutions in Ukraine.

His concept of positive effect of definite physical factors in treatment of different pathologies in obstetrics and gynecology is of great theoretical value. He was the first who grounded theoretically and proved experimentally the possibility of use the electromagnetic waves of millimeter range in treatment of diseases which are accompanied by disturbances in neuroimmune and hormonal regulation.

Professor V. Zaporozhan pays special attention to working out modern methods for treatment of preeclampsia and extra genital pathology in pregnancy, prevention and treatment of inflammatory postnatal complications.

He also studies the curative effect of non-medicinal methods, i.e. intravascular laser and ultra-violet irradiation of the blood, use of electromagnetic waves of millimeter range, hyper oxygenation of the blood. He was among first who performed integrated evaluation of the state of immune, endocrine, protease-inhibitory, oxygenation, hemostatic systems and their interrelations during normal and complicated pregnancy.
